Cigar Wrapper
(Dominican Republic)

Nicotiana tabacum L
[ Approximately 100 seeds per packet ]
'Cigar Wrapper', aka 'Dominican Republic', can grow to about seventy inches tall when topped and over seven feet tall when allowed to produce its heads full of pink flowers. Its leaves tend to be long and narrow, more than twice as long as wide (ten inches wide by twenty-four inches long), and as its name implies, were historically used for cigar wrappers.

Our original seed was sent to us by tobacco variety preservationist, David Pendergrass of Tennessee who obtained it from USDA accession number PI 552617.

Tobacco plants are very interesting, ornamental, and have many uses apart from consumption. Tobacco seeds are not classified as tobacco products. We promote the cultivation of tobacco plants, but we do not promote the use of tobacco products.
Tobacco seeds are tiny and look like dust, but each one has the potential to quickly grow into a huge tobacco plant. They need light to germinate. Sprinkle the seeds onto the surface of a moist and sterile seed starting mix. Do not cover the seeds. They also must never be allowed to dry out, so they are frequently (but gently) watered using a mist from a spray bottle. While waiting for germination, it can help to cover them with some kind of plastic sheeting to help hold moisture.

Once tiny seedlings emerge, you can pick them out one by one and move them into individual cells. Very lightly fertilize and never allow the potting soil to dry out. Within 6 weeks it'll be ready to plant in the garden. Wait until all risk of frost is over before planting outdoors.

★★★★★ 6 Months and 10 Feet Later
By Haole with the Heater (Hawaii 12b) on February 18, 2025

I ordered these along with 4 other cigar wrap varieties. The others all grew within what was advertised, but these have been producing huge, quality, and easy to process leaves nonstop for months. At this point they're over 10 feet tall and don't show any signs of slowing. Their maintenance has been as basic as possible too. Bi weekly weeding and 3-3-3 chicken manure along with monthly mulch has kept them thriving. Plucking flowers has kept them from fully flowering and kept them producing. At this point I have a few I let go to flower and a bunch of cutting starting to produce, Just to see what happens, but I'll definitely be buying again regardless. Honestly, these have been the best bang for your buck on any seeds I've ever bought and I don't shut up about them.
