Burley 9 TobaccoBurley 9 is a high-yielding mid-season variety for air curing and drying. Leaves are light green, averaging 16" wide by 24" long. The leaves turn yellow as they ripen and dry to a light golden brown. It matures in 65 days. Burley 9 is drought resistant and resistant to disease. Nicotine content of 1.6%.
Wild / Sacred Rustica Tobacco (Aztec)Reaches 3-feet tall, is vigorous and fairly hardy. Its yellow flowers bloom from July through September. Originated in Mexico but was widely cultivated throughout North America by native peoples for ceremonial purposes. Potency is high and reportedly was used as an arrow poison.
Cuban Criollo 98 TobaccoCuban Criollo 98 is one of the most valued strains for Cuban cigars. It originated from a crossing between the varieties ' Havana 92' and `Habana P.R'. Cultivated in the sun it produces from 14 to 16 useful leaves per plant and makes an excellent binder. It reaches an average height of 6 feet. Leaves average 24 inches in length and 12 inches wide. It is resistant to the Blue Mold, the Blackish Paw and the Tobacco Mosaic Virus and moderately resistant to the Environmental Necrosis.
Mohawk TobaccoReaches about three feet in height, is vigorous and fairly hardy. The abundant yellow blooms bloom all day from July through September. A wild tobacco cultivated by Eastern tribes, it is reportedly high in nicotine, used for sacred or ceremonial purposes and not for habitual smoking.
TN90 Burley TobaccoTN 90 is one of the most widely grown tobaccos in the world. It is an excellent Burley tobacco variety having resistance to TVMV, TEV and PVY. In addition to superior disease resistance and high yield potential, it's earlier maturity and smaller stalk offer an advantage over TN 86 to some growers. The light green leaves turn yellow when ripe and air cure easily, both primed or stalk hung. It matures in 70 days.
Red Russian TobaccoThe plants are short, averaging three to four feet. The leaf color is a beautiful dark green with a rounded shape resembling old Cuban-types. The leaves cure to a medium tan to light red color. Note: The surgeon general has determined that tobacco abuse can cause cancer.
Havana 608 TobaccoHavana 608 is a cigar filler or binder tobacco. It grows to 6' closely spaced leaves and matures in about 65 days. The leaves are a very bright green and upturned with slightly down turned tips. It holds up well during inclement weather and the pyramidal shape gives it good wind resistance. The leaves turn a light yellow green with yellowing at the edges when ripe. Plants average 20 harvestable leaves per plant, and are 14"-16" in width and 20" long. Air cures to a medium brown.
Virginia Gold TobaccoVirginia Gold is a well known heirloom variety dating back well over 50 years. It grows to a height of 6'-7' with low suckering. The light green leaves are from 14" to 18" wide and 24" to 30" long, and turn a light yellow when ripe. The plants produce an average of 18 leaves per plant below the crows foot, with yields averaging 3 oz of dried leaf per plant. Matures in 55 days.
Virginia Bright Leaf TobaccoSince their flower heads will reach five or more feet, the plants make very interesting additions to flower gardens. If they are used ornamentally, they are typically planted in the back of the flowerbeds. A flue cured tobacco that was primarily used for cigarette and pipe blends.
Black Sea Samsun TobaccoThe plants make very interesting additions to flower gardens. Since their flower heads will reach five or more feet, if they are used ornamentally, they are typically planted in the back of the flowerbeds. Note: The surgeon general has determined that tobacco abuse can cause cancer.
Golden Burley TobaccoHistorically used for plug tobacco, cigarette and pipe blending, as well as for blending material for cigar filler.
Connecticut Broadleaf TobaccoSince their flower heads will reach five or more feet, if they are used ornamentally, they are typically planted in the back of the flowerbeds. Large, fine-grade leaves are used for cigar wrappers. The lower-grade leaves on the plants are used for cigar filler, blending, and binder leaves.
Punche TobaccoPunche is one of the earliest maturing varieties of rustica (wild) at just 35 days. It is a good choice for growers with a very short season or as a late season crop. It can be planted out earlier than many other tobaccos and mature plants are frost tolerant. As with other rustica varieties, it has a very high nicotine content.
Connecticut Shade TobaccoSince their flower heads will reach eight or more feet, if they are used ornamentally, they are typically planted in the back of the flowerbeds. Leaves are light-green and average a foot wide by 18 inches long. When shade grown, leaves are finer, larger, and more elastic, producing some of the finest cigar wrappers.
Perique TobaccoSince the flower heads will reach five or more feet, if they are used ornamentally, they are typically planted in the back of a flowerbed. Historically used as a smoking, chewing, cigar and cigarette variety. It is generally not used exclusively, but rather used sparingly in mixes to add body and dimension to a blend.
Tobacco plants are very interesting, ornamental, and have many uses apart from consumption. Tobacco seeds are not classified as tobacco products. We promote the cultivation of tobacco plants, but we do not promote the use of tobacco products.
Tobacco seeds are tiny and look like dust, but each one has the potential to quickly grow into a huge tobacco plant. They need light to germinate. Sprinkle the seeds onto the surface of a moist and sterile seed starting mix. Do not cover the seeds. They also must never be allowed to dry out, so they are frequently (but gently) watered using a mist from a spray bottle. While waiting for germination, it can help to cover them with some kind of plastic sheeting to help hold moisture.
Once tiny seedlings emerge, you can pick them out one by one and move them into individual cells. Very lightly fertilize and never allow the potting soil to dry out. Within 6 weeks it'll be ready to plant in the garden. Wait until all risk of frost is over before planting outdoors.
