Red Russian
Nicotiana tabacum L.
[ Approximately 100 seeds per packet ]

Plants are short, averaging three to four feet, leaf color is a beautiful dark green with a rounded shape resembling old Cuban-types. The leaves cure to a medium tan to light red color. As you can see from the picture, the flowers are beautiful making this variety a great choice as an ornamental plant.

We do not know much about this variety other than the USDA added it to their seed collection in 1939, and that it is accession number TC 588.

Tobacco plants are very interesting, ornamental, and have many uses apart from consumption. Tobacco seeds are not classified as tobacco products. We promote the cultivation of tobacco plants, but we do not promote the use of tobacco products.
Tobacco seeds are tiny and look like dust, but each one has the potential to quickly grow into a huge tobacco plant. They need light to germinate. Sprinkle the seeds onto the surface of a moist and sterile seed starting mix. Do not cover the seeds. They also must never be allowed to dry out, so they are frequently (but gently) watered using a mist from a spray bottle. While waiting for germination, it can help to cover them with some kind of plastic sheeting to help hold moisture.

Once tiny seedlings emerge, you can pick them out one by one and move them into individual cells. Very lightly fertilize and never allow the potting soil to dry out. Within 6 weeks it'll be ready to plant in the garden. Wait until all risk of frost is over before planting outdoors.

Wow! Not only the best selection with great information on the website, Jon personally helped me with my first round of germination / seedlings to a great success. I highly recommend Victory Seeds.

★★★★★ Attracts hummingbirds
By RB (Central IL) on November 5, 2023

I grew this plant in a pollinator garden beset by deer. The deer did take bites out of a few leaves, but mostly left it alone. Hummingbirds really liked it, and it had good garden height without being unwieldy. Lots of attractive flowers- more pink than red.

★★★★☆ Good northern variety
By Ian H West (Wasilla, Alaska) on October 13, 2023

Grown in a variety of soil types and both in hot house and outdoors, grew fast and overwhelming in hothouse, growing good wrapper leaves. Outdoors it grew despite minimal sunshine, giving short leaf internodes until late summer as they began to stretch and grow overwhelming. Some lower leaves were predated by slugs unlike my rustic cultivars, possibly lower in nicotine with exception to the green tops that are quite fuzzy and sticky. Out of 14 plants, five had light golden flowers and nine had vibrant rosy red. Beautiful ornamental plant, decent producer, but not a good insect deterrent plant.
