It was bred by the South Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station and Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina and released in 1971 as a stabilized cross between 'South Carolina 59-11' and 'Floricream'. Each ounce is approximately 100 seeds.

Resistant to root knot nematodes, under widely varying environmental conditions, disease, and insect pressures, performs well. The exception isΒ  where thrips are a problem. If you have thrips in your area, keep an eye out for their telltale damage - malformed and puckered leaves - especially when the plants are young.
