This annual legume grows to about twenty-four inches in height. The leaves divided into eight to fifteen opposite pairs of leaflets, and the flowers are bright yellow with five unequal petals. In the wild they are found mainly in sandy soils in old fields, pastures and open woodlands from Maine to Florida and west to South Dakota, Texas, and Mexico.
In the yard, plant in well-draining soils and sunny locations. The seeds are an important food source for many game and song birds. Each packet contains 1 gram, which is approximately 100 seeds.
